Why is it not possible to measure the subtle energy in our bodies (or if it is, then how)?
Is it simply because science does not have the instruments and methods?
Since the manipulation of these energies and winds can be felt and are effective it would seem that it should be possible to measure or track them?
Does anyone know of a good explanation (or web site) that explains this in a plausible way?
For instance, is the central channel physical? I don't think it is but then how do winds (are they physical) enter?
Thanks, Jeff

Good questions. As far as I know, this is (still) beyond science. In theory, it could also be merely a mental/consciousness phenomenon, which - as it is not physical - is then automatically beyond science as we know it.
The winds are also described as energy, possibly subtle energy, and would probably not be easily detectable. As long as we have no idea about things like wave-length/frequency of this energy, it may be like searching for the proverbial needle in the haystack.
On the other hand, we may have already discovered energy channels in the form of nerves throughout our bodies, and the energy could be the electrical currents that they operate with. Still, it would not be clear why certain channels/nerves would be so important in specific meditation practices. The same is true for the Chinese energy channels used in e.g. acupuncture; I think it is undeniable that they work and can have very strong effects, but as far as I know, Western scientists have no clue about them.

I can feel subtle energy really strongly, from my own personal experience they are often not that subtle. But can they be measured? Any research I have done has resulted in very dissatisfactory answers. Most searches on the web produce a lot of garbage, and people trying to sell weird products. The central energy channel is said to be about 2 inches in front of the spine, and the other two main ones also do not correlate directly to the location of the nerves in the nervous system. Yet many descriptions I have read or heard seem to say there is a definite correlation between the nervous system, nerves and the energy channels. In fact the energy channels are sometimes referred to as nerves. I suspect eventually there will be better understanding between Buddhism and Western science on this matter. One of the difficulties is that the majority of practice that involves subtle energy, chakras and energy channels is esoteric, and serious Tibetan Buddhists take the tradition of keeping them secret until various initiations very serious. So it is hard to compare and contrast what is not spoken about freely.

This question was dealt with in the 26.Mind and Life Conference last January, please see www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOpVrprggG0It starts with the double slit experiment goes to `Schroedingers cat` and much more, all explained in a plain and quite understandable way. Pretty breathtaking and highly recommendable. Tamara
